Planning Travel with Toddlers

Traveling with kids can be fun, but it can also be
challenging. Though your kids may like going on
trips with you, they may also find car journeys very
boring and tiresome. Below are some tips to
make car journeys interesting for your toddlers and
manageable for you:

1. Try to drive primarily when it's sleeping time for
your toddler. You can do this by starting very early in
the morning or in the early afternoon, when your children
will generally be sleeping. This way the kids will get
their required sleep and will not be restless. If you
choose non-daylight hours, be sure that you are
comfortable driving in darkness along unfamiliar roads.

2. Take along fun car games and favorite toys. Help the
kids to see your trip as an adventure. Buy them travel
games or a special toy or activity to help them stay
preoccupied during the trip. It also helps to bring along
a favorite toy that will lend itself to a feeling of
security or comfort. A preferred blanket or funny drinking
cup and straw might also help to promote a feeling of
well-being.

3. Make frequent stops. Kids can get tired of driving for
long periods of time, and they need to exercise or stretch
their legs. Make a point of pulling over every hour or two
at a service station or convenience store for the purpose
of restroom stops or a short sprint to get the legs
untangled. A drink of water or a pretty view might be
other reasons to stop for a few minutes. Make it enjoyable
rather than stressful for everyone.

4. Keep the car as clean during your trip as possible.
Carry travel hygiene items like a container with a lid
(for motion sickness or food poisoning),tissues and wet
wipes for sticky fingers and lips, and a trash bag for
disposing of uneaten food, empty cans, wrappings, and the
like.

5. Check out places of interest along your route. Some
unexpected fun prior to arrival at your final destination
will likely be appreciated by both you and your kids. Look
for child-friendly stops such as playgrounds, zoos, and
novelty locations.

There's a saying that "When Mommy's happy, everyone's
happy." If Mommy (and Daddy!) plan ahead with everyone's
comfort and well-being in mind, then trips ought to be
a source of happiness to all!
