DESTINATION LONDON

Most people visiting London are surprised for some reason
at how modern it is. Although London is rich in history
and offers wonderful architecture, the life here is
actually quite westernized in many ways. Something most
people do not know is that London features more than 200
galleries, well over 300 museums, and every day of the
year, approximately 150 events! Because of this, many
people relate London to New York in being a city that
never sleeps.

London is so vast that there are plenty of amazing things
to do and see no matter how young or old you are. You
should always visit the magnificent Buckingham Palace and
you should never miss the Changing of the Guards there,
either.

The guarding of these palaces dates back to 1660. For
example, the Palace of Whitehall was the primary residence
in London by the Royal family until the late 1600s.
Because of that, this palace was heavily guarded by the
Household Calvary. Today, the guards still stand erect
and alert, holding the position. The Changing of the
Guard has a long history and something you do not want to
miss when visiting London.

It may sound tedious but this is actually an amazing event
to watch. Their uniforms which consist of bearskin hats
and red tunics are beautiful and the military precision
with which the old guard is replaced by the new guard is
something you could never experience elsewhere. So make
sure you are there for this 45 minute spectacle that takes
place at 11:30 am every day.

Make sure you take time to visit Windsor Castle whilst you
are in London too. This castle is over 900 years old. Its
original purpose was to defend the western approach but
today it is still one of the Queen~s official residences
and many Official and State events are held here. Changing
of the guard happens here too and takes a slightly
different but still spectacular approach. If the Queen is
in residence the guards will walk through the town with a
band following, if not they will go to the castle on
horses.

All in all London really is an amazing travel destination.
You can take in the magnificence of the city and the
surrounding countryside in a number of ways. There are
guided and private tours, helicopter rides and coach
tours, walking tours and boat trips on the River Thames,
train tours and steam train tours and much, much more
besides.
