The Caribbean is made up of over seven thousand island,
reefs, caves and islets and includes 25 territories that
are sovereign states, overseas departments and
dependencies. Its location is southeast of Mexico and
northwest of Venezuela and all these islands border along
the Caribbean Sea.
They were named the West Indies because Christopher
Columbus mistakenly thought he landed in the actual Indies
just southeast of Asia. What he really landed on was
America. The Caribbean gets its name from the dominant
native groups of the region from the Europeans that arrived
there. The Caribbean is thought to be part of North
American however, it didn't become popular until after
World War II
Before becoming a tourist hot spot, the Caribbean was
inundated with different types of religious people and
explorers who heard of Columbus' discovery and ran there
probably to avoid some kind of oppression. Most of these
people were of African or European decent which helped with
the language barrier making it one of the most popular
tourist destinations of today.
Many are attracted to these wonderful islands because of
the climate and tropical atmosphere. People from all over
the world come to visit the beautiful beaches to fish, sail
and play golf at some of the finest golf courses on the
planet. One of the most festive times of the year is New
Years and the energy and creativity bring many to enjoy the
New Years Day Junkanoo Parade. A blend of Mardi Gras and
African tribal ritual and starts in downtown Nassau in the
Bahamas and ends at Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival.
The climate in the Caribbean is always a balmy tropical
setting depending on what elevation you're at. Higher
elevations of course may be a bit cooler, but the winds
from the northeast keep things at a pretty even
temperature. For example, if you are in Kingston, Jamaica
the temperature is 26 degrees Celsius. However, if you're
up in Mandeville, a little over 600 meters high the
temperature is a cool 10 degrees Celsius.
There are few natural resources in the Caribbean islands.
Jamaica contains extensive deposits of bauxite, some of
which is mined and processed locally into aluminum for
export to the United States, which is its largest market.
Many of the islands contain small deposits of copper, lead,
manganese, and zinc, but they are not commercially viable.
What the territories do possess are beautiful beaches and a
pleasant climate, which have made tourism the Caribbean's
economic backbone.
