Suggestions for a Vacation Getaway

Does the phrase "adventure holiday" make you shiver? Do
you think they're only for kids or health nuts? Not so!
There's an adventure vacation for just about every person
out there, so take advantage of all the great options.
There's no better holiday than one in which you discover
a new place and a new talent of your own!

If you're into sports you could certainly consider a
cross-country skiing vacation in a wintry wonderland,
or you could go a little bit more exotic by signing up
for a rock climbing package. But if these activities just
aren't for you, there's plenty of other options. How about
booking reservations in a country that you've never been
to before, one that's not a hugely popular tourist
destination?

Get off the well-trod path and explore some place new,
you'll discover wonderful things about yourself in the
process.

It's important to start by considering what you hope to
take away from your vacation and whether that goal is
appropriate for your family. If you have very young
children, for example, you probably should steer clear
of that rock-climbing vacation, unless you can find a
way to leave the children at home. But never fear--
there's an adventure vacation for just about everybody
and every age group.

A good place to start your planning is by asking what
things you have always wanted to do or see. For example, if
you have always wanted to ride a horse, then there are a
lot of great horse-riding holidays available at home and
abroad. Many of these cater for beginners, so lack of
experience or knowledge is no barrier.

Maybe you have always wanted to visit a particular place -
the Parthenon in Greece, or the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem?
For many people this is truly an adventure, and also can be
the most rewarding type of holiday.

For trips like this there are travel companies that
specialize in slightly more adventurous trips - this
usually means that you may get to stay in more interesting
hotels and visit sights that are off-the-beaten track. Of
course if you are confident, you can sort yourself out -
buy your ticket, a guidebook and away you go!

Having trouble coming up with a destination? Well, the
list is miles long. Places that used to be off-limits are
now good choices again, such as Ethiopia, which has just
seen the end of a civil war. Other terrific options are
Nepal, Jordan and Chile--all incredibly rich cultures
that will yield a fascinating experience for any traveler.

To get the best of both worlds--a stimulating mental
journey and a physically challenging one, too--combine
both types of holiday. Visit an exotic location, then
explore it on foot rather than by car or bus. One
terrific idea is to travel to an island, like Madeira,
the "Garden Island," and camp out of doors.

You won't want to be burdened down with your backpacking
equipment at all times, though, so consider participating
in an organized tour. The tour company will take care of
your baggage while you're out exploring on foot.

You don't necessarily have to travel far from home in
order to have an unusual vacation experience. Consider
the options that may exist in your own backyard!
Adventurous souls may want to challenge themselves to
hike the entirety of the Appalachian Trail, breaking
down the 2,174-mile path into manageable chunks. Or
simply get yourself to learn a new activity: white-water
rafting, bungee-jumping, canoeing, and so on.

Whatever you decide, keep in mind that preparation is
the key ingredient in creating a successful holiday.
Exercise regularly in advance of your trip to ensure
that you're in good shape for your adventure vacation,
even if the active portion of it is simply touring by
foot. Read up on the culture and study some maps before
you arrive in your new locale, so you know what to
expect.

Doing so will put you in a great mindset for setting off
on your adventure holiday!
