Barcelona (known simply as "Barca" by the natives) is one
of Spain's--and Europe's--most exciting and culturally
intoxicating cities. Its numerous attractions appeal to
locals and tourists alike. The restaurants, bars, shops
and glorious architecture are all big draws, as is the
city's proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. There's no
shortage of things to do in Barcelona:

1. Hoof it. Walk around! The streets of Barcelona are
meant for pleasant strolls, which will allow you take in
the sights at a calm pace. The climate is likely to work
in your favor, as with so many places on the
Mediterranean. Get out there and enjoy it!

2. Treat your eyes to the sight of Antonio Gaudi's famed
architecture. Barcelona is lucky enough to be home to
some of Spain's most beatiful buildings, including the
Casa Mila, an apartment house with stunning blue-
green walls that curve like a serpent's body. Gaudi is
well known for his whimsical designs and colorful decor,
qualities that are both on display here. Go up to the
roof for a view of the statuesque chimney stacks lined
up like soldiers guarding the city. You should also
be sure to check out the architect's Sagrada Familia, a
soaring cathedral that is still under construction.

3. Hang out in the Park Guell. More magical still is the
park Gaudi designed in the early 1900s. It is one of the
most remarkable and beautiful city parks in the world and
it is well used and loved by the people of the city. You
must climb steps and paths to reach the huge terrace
overlooking the city. The benches that border the terrace
are covered with mosaics. Here kids play football while
their parents relax drink coffee in the cafes. On the paths
that take you away from the terrace and further up the hill
are forests and small hollows carved out of large rocks,
also designed by Gaudi, where you can sit in private and
read.

4. Walk along La Rambla, a long path connected the old
city to the sea's edge. In days past the street was a
viaduct, but today is houses shops, bars and theatrical
venues. About half-way down the Ramble you'll come
across an indoor food market where you can buy anything
from cheese to sausage to fresh vegetables to dried
fruits.

5. Indulge your artistic side. Stop in at the Musee
Picasso, a cozy museum devoted solely to the Spanish
artist Pablo Picasso. Here you'll find many fine pieces
of ceramic artwork, childhood sketches, mature works
and information on the artist's life. The museum is
full of fascinating and beautiful images, but it's small
enough to explore over the course of an afternoon.

6. Visit the Noucamp. Another must see for sports fans is
the Camp Nou, home of Barcelona Football Club. The stadium
has played host to some of the best European soccer games.
And if you're not lucky enough to see a game you can always
take a guided tour and look at the soccer museum.
